Common patterns we see

In GCSE English, ideas can arrive quickly but still be hard to shape into a focused answer. Students with ADHD may lose attention partway through a text, miss important details, or drift from the question as they write. Timed responses can add pressure because planning, selecting evidence and organising thoughts all have to happen at speed.

Helpful support gives the writing a clearer track to follow: prompts for planning, small next steps, regular pauses to re-check the question and simple ways to mark what has already been covered. This can make exam practice feel less scattered and more manageable.

What progress looks like

For GCSE English, an early sign of progress can be simply getting into the text with less friction.

The set text comes out without a long negotiation. Where opening the novel used to become a standoff, your child sits down, finds their place and makes a start.

After a chapter, they can tell you what one character wants. It may be a small detail, but it suggests the story is beginning to stay with them between sessions rather than disappearing as soon as the book closes.

Essay planning starts to happen before the writing. A rough spider diagram, a few bullet points or a boxed-off quotation still count, because the “begin here” step is becoming less of a barrier.

In timed practice, they read a source text twice instead of rushing straight into the answer. That second read can help them notice tone, implication or a shift in meaning that they might previously have skimmed over.

Proofreading becomes its own named step. Even one extra minute at the end of a task is useful if it means checking is no longer being missed altogether.

There will still be weeks when writing feels harder again, or reading feels slower than expected. The tutor looks at the longer pattern, not just one task, and shares what is changing in regular progress reviews.
