An Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) is a legal document that combines a student’s educational, health and social care needs in one place. It contains specific, measurable outcomes and details the specialist teaching, therapies and other support required; including one-to-one SEN tutoring, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy or social care input.
How to apply for an EHCP
-
Request an EHC Needs Assessment
To start the EHCP process, you’ll need to formally request an EHC Needs Assessment from your Local Authority (LA). This is typically done by writing a letter or email to the LA’s Special Educational Needs department. Clearly state you are requesting an assessment under the Children and Families Act 2014.
We have built a downloadable EHCP application checklist to help you keep track of your progress and make sure that nothing has been forgotten.
-
Gather Evidence
Collect documents from educational psychologists, speech & language therapists, occupational therapists, CAMHS, tutors, coaches and other specialists. Use our EHCP Application Checklist and ECHP Evidence Tracker tools to support your application. This evidence will become the main structure of the assessment, showing your needs and the support received or required.
-
Create a Draft Plan
Explain your goals, current barriers, and what support is currently working best for your child. It is important that Sections B (Special Educational Needs), F (Special Educational Provision), and I (Placement) are specific, detailed, quantified, and accurately reflect your child’s needs and the necessary support so that the local authority can justdge your case accurately. Section F is where you can request tutoring, and more importantly, ADHD, autism, dyslexia, or SEN coaching.
We Can Help You Get Your EHCP
-
Understanding the Legal Framework
Our team can help clarify your rights under the Children and Families Act 2014 and the SEND Code of Practice. We’ll explain the deadlines the Local Authority must adhere to (e.g., 6 weeks to decide on whether to assess, 16 weeks to draft a plan, 20 weeks for a final plan) and what information to provide at each stage.
-
Gathering Strong Evidence
Building robust evidence is key to your EHCP application. We can guide you on the types of professional reports (e.g. from educational psychologists, ocupational therapists, etc) that demonstrate your SEN needs.
-
Creating a Costed Provision Plan
We can help check your schedule of recommended support, detailing hours of 1:1 tuition and coaching alongside any additional support. This helps provide a transparent cost breakdown so the local authority can see exactly what funding is needed to deliver your results.
-
Negotiation
When you receive your draft EHCP, our consultants review Sections B (needs) and F (provision), making sure all targets are legally enforceable.
