Common patterns we see

The method may make sense in class, but a differently worded GCSE Maths question can still stop a student in their tracks. For autistic students, uncertainty around phrasing, multi-step working or what to practise first can create pressure before the maths has really begun. Timed work can add to this, especially when several steps need to be held in mind.

It helps to make the route through each task explicit: clear instructions, one manageable step at a time, and short checks that become familiar through repetition. With the uncertainty reduced, homework and revision are less likely to become a point of tension.

What progress looks like

01

For GCSE Maths, a useful early change is that a problem no longer has to look exactly like the example before your child can begin.

02

They attempt a question where the numbers or context have changed, instead of stopping because it “looks wrong”. For autistic students, applying a familiar method to an unfamiliar version is a meaningful step.

03

Their working becomes more visible. Rather than writing only the final answer, they talk through or set out the steps, which also helps them access the method marks that matter at GCSE.

04

You may hear more questions about why a method works, not just what should be written down. That move from memorising a procedure towards understanding the reason behind it is easy to miss, but important.

05

A wrong answer does not always end the task. They may go back to look for the error, compare it with the method, or ask where the slip happened, rather than closing the paper straight away.

06

Some GCSE Maths weeks will still feel stuck, especially when wording or layout changes. The tutor watches for the wider pattern: starting, explaining, generalising and recovering from mistakes, then shares that picture in regular progress reviews.
