My experience with special educational needs
I currently work as a 1:1 SEN Teacher, supporting young people with a range of needs, including autism, ADHD, SEMH needs, dyslexia, anxiety and mild learning difficulties. In this role, I adapt each lesson around the student’s individual needs and learning style. This may include adjusting the pace, using visuals, breaking tasks into smaller chunks, giving extra processing time, or adapting the activity if the student is having difficulty engaging. I am also a Qualified Science Teacher and experienced Online Tutor. I have supported students with dyslexia, EAL, low confidence and other learning needs across KS3, GCSE and iGCSE Science. My experience has taught me that students with SEN often need patience, structure, flexibility, encouragement and a calm learning environment where they feel understood.
A bit about me
I am a qualified teacher and experienced tutor. I have worked in education for over a decade, teaching and tutoring students across KS3, 13+, GCSE and iGCSE. My main subject specialism is Science, particularly Biology and Chemistry. I enjoy helping students who may feel anxious, overwhelmed or unsure of themselves to build confidence and experience success in small, manageable steps. I would describe myself as calm, patient, encouraging and adaptable. I believe every young person learns differently, and I enjoy finding the explanation, activity or approach that helps things finally “click” for them. My aim is always to help students feel more confident, capable and supported, both academically and personally.
My teaching philosophy
My teaching approach is calm, structured and student-centred. I start by getting to know the student, understand what they find difficult, what helps them learn best and what might be getting in the way of their confidence or engagement (if any). I break learning down into small, clear steps and use modelling, visuals, questioning, and regular checks for understanding. I also use real-life examples to make difficult concepts easier to understand. For students with SEN, flexibility is essential. Some students may need a predictable routine, while others may need choice-based tasks, reduced written work, extra processing time or a different way of approaching the same topic. I adapt the lesson as we go, depending on the student. I also believe relationships are key. A student is much more likely to learn when they feel comfortable, encouraged and unafraid to make mistakes. My goal is to help each student build confidence, independence and belief in their ability.

My son really enjoys his lessons with Sylvia and finds them extremely helpful. The sessions are well structured, and Sylvia explains everything in a way that makes sense. His confidence in Chemistry has grown so much, and he recently got an attainment of 85% in Chemistry. I’d highly recommend Sylvia as a science tutor.

Sylvia is patient and creates a calm and supportive learning environment where my daughter feels comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. Our daughter has become more confident and independent in her learning with Sylvia. We are very pleased with the progress she has made.

Sylvia is organised, professional and keeps us informed throughout. She provides thorough feedback, explaining how our child is progressing, and is always happy to answer questions. Her lessons are engaging and focused on helping my daughter build both confidence and strong exam skills. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her.
