My experience with special educational needs
Throughout my 20+ years teaching career, I have worked across mainstream schools, specialist provision, private tutoring and community/adult learning. During my time I have taught and supported students with a wide range of special educational needs, including autism spectrum condition (ASC), ADHD, dyslexia, speech and language needs, social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, and learning difficulties. I have successfully adapted lessons to meet individual learning profiles, using differentiated resources, clear routines, visual supports and structured questioning to ensure every learner can access the curriculum and make meaningful progress. Whether teaching online or face to face, I build positive, trusting relationships with students, recognising that confidence and emotional wellbeing are key foundations for learning. I work closely with families and other professionals to develop personalised approaches that celebrate strengths while addressing barriers to learning.
A bit about me
Having worked with a range of learners with a range of barriers, across a range of settings, I recognise how crucial it is to develop positive relationships. I am a compassionate, patient and reflective tutor who genuinely believes that every young person deserves the opportunity to succeed. I enjoy getting to know each learner as an individual and tailoring my teaching to suit their interests, strengths and preferred learning style. My positive encouraging approach helps students feel safe, valued and motivated, particularly those who may have had negative experiences of education. I take pride in creating engaging lessons that build confidence as well as academic skills and I am committed to helping learners develop independence, resilience and a love of learning.
My teaching philosophy
My teaching philosophy is centred on the belief that every learner can achieve when they are provided with the right support, high expectations and a positive learning environment. I strive to make learning accessible, enjoyable and purposeful by adapting my teaching to meet individual needs rather than expecting learners to fit a single approach. Through assessment, regular feedback and flexible teaching strategies, I ensure that progress is both measurable and meaningful. Above all, I believe that strong relationships, mutual respect and genuine encouragement empower students to develop the confidence, skills and independence they need to thrive both in education and beyond.
