My experience with special educational needs
Kath has extensive experience supporting young people with SEND and additional needs, alongside those experiencing social, emotional, and mental health challenges. She has a strong understanding of the barriers that can affect engagement, attendance, learning, and wellbeing, and works closely with young people, families, schools, and external agencies to develop supportive, individualised approaches. Her practice is firmly rooted in trauma-informed approaches. Kath understands the importance of creating environments where young people feel emotionally and physically safe, where their experiences are listened to without judgement, and where relationships are at the heart of support. Kath is also an experienced coach and mentor, using reflective and solution-focused approaches to support both young people and professionals.
A bit about me
Kath is an experienced education professional with over 20 years’ experience in secondary education. Her work is driven by a deep commitment to connection, advocacy, and inclusion, with a particular focus on ensuring that young people feel safe, understood, supported, and able to thrive—especially those who may struggle to access or remain in mainstream education. Kath has personal experience of SEN; her daughter is autistic and also has PDA. She has faced many challenges with personal relationships, school avoidance and managing her sensory needs.
My teaching philosophy
At the heart of Kath’s work is a belief that every young person deserves to be understood as an individual and supported to recognise their strengths and potential. She brings together extensive experience in education, SEND, trauma-informed practice, pastoral support, wellbeing, and assessment to create inclusive environments where young people can feel safe, connected, and empowered to move forward positively. Her approach centres on building trusting relationships, amplifying young people’s voices, and advocating for the right support at the right time.
