My experience with special educational needs
In my work as an SEN tutor and after-school teacher since 2017, I have taught Maths, English, and Science classes of up to 8 students, both in person and online, often working with students with a range of learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, and ASD. In my role as a disability/study skills support worker, I provide support to students of all adult ages, helping them with learning/study techniques, proofreading, exam preparation, and life skills, tailored to their educational needs (dyslexia, ASD, traumatic brain injuries etc).In the last 6 years, this has often taken the form of online support, working together over a range of collaborative online services (such as Drive documents, and Pencilspaces). Students are across a range of subjects, such as maths, engineering, social work, psychology, photography, computer science, and music & film.
A bit about me
I'm Joseph, an energetic Londoner with a love of learning! After volunteering/working with KIDS charity as a teenager, I studied Cognitive Science at Edinburgh University, followed by Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Amsterdam, and finally working as a neuroscientist at UCL. Understanding how intricate delicate processes add up to something more complex and interesting than the sum of its parts has always fascinated me, be that in language, movement, or cognition (thinking about thinking!). My hobbies range from bouldering and football to writing limericks and creating puzzles/quizzes for my friends and family. I like to engage with the exciting phase of picking up a new interest and the steep learning curve that comes with it, and then later the granular fine tuning that you get to do when really getting into the tiny details. Currently that means learning Danish, the guitar, and baking!
My teaching philosophy
I believe in a student-centered, needs based approach to teaching. My teaching ethos is all about trying to understand and support the thinking and learning style of whoever I'm working with. Through this, I hope to help provide empowerment and the tools needed for a student to engage with learning in their own way.

have known Joseph since 2024 and have worked with him extensively in an educational setting. During this time, he has helped deliver a number of group classes preparing students for the 7+, 8+, and 11+ entrance examinations. Joseph has an excellent rapport with children and is particularly skilled at maintaining a positive classroom environment. He is calm, patient, and very effective at helping students who may be struggling with confidence, focus, or emotional regulation. His ability to keep children engaged while maintaining clear expectations makes him a valuable member of any teaching team. Academically, Joseph is knowledgeable across a wide range of subjects, allowing him to teach and support students in Mathematics, English Comprehension, Creative Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. This versatility has been incredibly helpful when running busy group sessions. Beyond the classroom, Joseph's interests in music, including guitar and piano, often help him connect with students and build strong relationships. He is reliable, professional, approachable, and well-liked by both children and parents. I would have no hesitation in recommending Joseph and believe he would be an asset to any educational organisation.
