My experience with special educational needs

A dedicated English Language and Literature specialist with extensive expertise in SEND, safeguarding, and school leadership. I have worked with neurodivergent students for well over a decade, helping them gain confidence and harnessing what are often high functioning skills that have gone untapped. This enables them to achieve their desired outcomes. Teaching, whether it be to a neurodiverse or neurohomogenous audience should always be tailored to the needs of the individual child. Many of my past students and their parents comment on my approach to learning and on my ability to convey complex but necessary ideas through innovative teaching methods. Children of all ages seek inspiration and motivation from their teachers and trusted adults, so marrying concepts and ideas with real-life tangible experiences is essential to a successful outcome.

A bit about me

I have worked in independent, mainstream and special needs settings over the years, and have enjoyed every moment! I have tutored students from Year 10 through their GCSEs, into their A Levels and have gone on to support them through Undergraduate study, developing and maintaining a long-term relationship. I have gained accreditation from MHFA (Mental Health First Aid) and have undergone many hours of specialist training for Autism Education, ADHD and SEMH from the Institute of Education. ADDITIONAL TRAINING & CPD ✔ Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL3) ✔ SEND & Inclusion – Code of Practice ✔ Mental Health First Aid (MHFA England) ✔ Ofsted & ISI Compliance ✔ Autism Education (UCL) ✔ School Leadership & Compliance In addition to this, and by extension, I have supported parents by providing advocacy when challenging school provision or negotiating funding with local authorities. A Mother of two boys, I understand the challenges faced by all parents as their children navigate school.

My teaching philosophy

My approach to teaching is bespoke. Regardless of need, each child is different and has different learning styles. Visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning will feature in any course that I teach, but at different points for different students. I base my learning models on Blooms Taxonomy as an underpinning foundation, but seek to ensure that lessons are not prescriptive, thereby allowing students to use a little autonomy in their approach to learning. In terms of coaching, I currently mentor a string of students with SEND. Rather than tell you what I think I do, I will leave you with this quote from one of my parents who kindly wrote a reference for me, She said "Jackie has a rare ability to connect with and motivate young people. My 17 year old daughter describes Jackie as 'magic'. My daughter, though capable, does not willingly buckle down to study but happily engages with Jackie. She has been a godsend!"

Jackie has a rare ability to connect with young people at their level and to motivate and encourage them to do their best. She has been amazing with my very tricky 17 year old daughter. Highly recommend.

Jackie has been an incredible tutor for my children, providing them with not only academic support but also confidence and motivation in their learning journey. Her patience, expertise, and engaging teaching style have made a significant impact, helping them grasp difficult concepts with ease. She tailors lessons to suit their individual needs, ensuring that they fully understand the material while making learning enjoyable. Jackie’s dedication and encouragement have fostered a positive learning environment, and the progress my children have made under her guidance has been remarkable. I wholeheartedly recommend Jackie to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, supportive, and inspiring tutor. She has truly made a difference to our children’s confidence and education grades.
