My experience with special educational needs

I currently work at Thornden School as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, where I support young people with a range of emotional, behavioural and additional needs, including students with autism, ADHD and other special educational needs. A big part of my role is getting to know each student individually and adapting the way I work to suit their needs. Some students need more time to process things, clearer communication or a more structured approach, while others may need support with anxiety, emotional regulation, confidence or difficulties that are affecting their education. My experience has taught me the importance of being patient, approachable and flexible. I work closely with students to help them feel understood and supported, while encouraging them to develop strategies that can help them both in school and in their everyday lives.

A bit about me

I’m a self-taught pianist and have been playing since I was 12. Learning independently has helped me understand that everyone learns differently and that progress doesn’t always follow a straight path. I’m patient, approachable and encouraging, and I want students to feel comfortable learning at their own pace. I particularly enjoy classical music and have developed my playing over the years through consistent practice and a genuine love of music.

My teaching philosophy

My approach is person-centred, patient and encouraging. I believe everyone learns differently, so I take the time to understand the individual, what they want to achieve and how they learn best. I aim to create a relaxed and supportive environment where people feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and building their confidence. I like to break things down into manageable steps, give clear guidance and encouragement, and adapt my approach as the person progresses.

Learning & study skills

Subject tutoring focuses on what is being learned (e.g., “I need help with Algebra.”).
Skills coaching focuses on how it is learned (e.g., “I need help getting organised to study for Algebra.”).
