My experience with special educational needs
I have worked as a one-to-one tutor for four years; specialising in children and adolescents with Special Educational and Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. During this time, I have worked with youngsters suffering with Trauma, Anxiety, Agoraphobia, Social Anxiety, Germ Phobia, Selective Mutism and Depression. I have also worked with pupils with a number of diagnosed conditions such as Autism, Dyslexia, ADHD and Down Syndrome.
A bit about me
I am a kind, accepting and patient individual who aims to have a calming impact on those I work with. From a young age, I have had an interest in working with children with additional needs- I chose modules related to Educational Psychology whilst studying for my bachelor's degree in Applied Psychology, as well as completing volunteering placements at SEN Schools. I find my job very rewarding and plan to continue in this sector for the rest of my forseeable working life. I also spent four years working as Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner; during which time I provided talking therapy sessions to clients struggling with common mental health problems.
My teaching philosophy
First and foremost, I think it is very important to build a trusting relationship and positive rapport with my students. Without this, I feel that it would be very difficult for anything productive to happen during sessions. I think it is important to make youngsters feel accepted and heard, and take lessons at their pace.
