My experience with special educational needs

Specialising in SEND for the past twenty-one years of my teaching career has meant that I have supported children across the whole diverse spectrum of needs, including autism, PDA, ADHD, DLD, dyslexia and dyscalculia, amongst others. I started out as a mainstream class teacher in primary schools, and it was here that my love of SEND took hold. I then moved into teaching in specialist settings, became an Assistant Educational Psychologist, then began working as a Specialist Teacher for a Local Authority. I loved that job and did it for almost twenty years, before deciding to take the plunge and set up my own SEND service (SEND&CO), providing SEND support for children, families and schools. Along the way I have tutored children, focusing on developing their English and Maths skills, as well as their social communication skills, memory skills, organisation, independence, emotional literacy, friendships and functional skills.

A bit about me

My experience with SEND spans more than two decades and has included work in Nurseries, Primary Schools and Secondary Schools. I have worked as a Specialist Teacher, an Assistant Educational Psychologist, a Mainstream Class Teacher, a Special School Class Teacher, a whole-class Teaching Assistant in a Secondary School and a one-to-one Teaching Assistant in a Nursery. SEND is my passion - so much so that I now run my own SEND service, whereby I work in schools developing their SEND provision and identifying and supporting children's needs, as well as supporting local families. I have two children of my own, both at Secondary School now, so I know how challenging navigating the school system can be, let alone the SEND system.

My teaching philosophy

My Masters in Language and Communication Impairment in Children enables me to connect with children who struggle with communication and my psychology degree gives me a thorough understanding of how children learn. I have a positive, warm and nurturing approach. I provide a calm and structured learning environment and I aim to make the students I work with feel supported, encouraged and successful. I like to establish where a student is currently at, work out where they want to get to and then plot out the small steps to help them bridge that distance together. I would love to hear from you if you think I can support your child to achieve their goals.

Charlotte has worked with pupils in our school on a group and 1:1 basis over many years, and provided 1:1 online tutoring for pupils with SEND during the pandemic. Children really enjoy their sessions with Charlotte. She is friendly, professional and knowledgeable and I would highly recommend her as a tutor!
