My experience with special educational needs
I have over 20 years’ experience as a secondary Science teacher, working in inclusive mainstream settings with a wide range of students, including those with autism, ADHD, anxiety, and other additional needs. Throughout my career, I have adapted my teaching to support students who may struggle in traditional classroom environments, helping them access learning in ways that work for them. More recently, I have worked as a specialist tutor, supporting autistic students on a 1 to 1 basis, and in small groups. These students are often disengaged and unable to attend school, and my role is to focus on rebuilding confidence, reducing anxiety, and helping students re-engage with learning at their own pace.
A bit about me
Alongside my professional experience, I also bring a great deal of personal understanding. I am myself late diagnosed AuDHD. This gives me valuable insight into how neurodivergent individuals experience the world differently, and the challenges this can pose, even though this may sometimes be well hidden I also have children who may be neurodivergent, so I understand from both sides how important it is for young people to feel safe, understood, and supported. I know that when a child feels comfortable and accepted, they are far more able to engage and make progress.
My teaching philosophy
I take a relational and child-led approach. I prioritise building trust and a sense of safety first, as I know this is the most important foundation for any meaningful learning to take place. I take time to understand each student as an individual — their strengths, interests, and what feels challenging for them. Where possible, I link learning to their experiences or any special interests they may have, which helps make sessions more engaging and less overwhelming. Rather than pushing on through content, I focus on working at the student’s pace, using flexible strategies and adapting in the moment. This helps students feel more in control of their learning, rebuild confidence, and experience success in a way that feels manageable and meaningful.
