My experience with special educational needs

I am a fully qualified teacher with over 14 years experience. During my career, I have always worked in schools with high level of SEND need. I have practical first hand experience of helping students with EHCPs, ASD, ADHD, SEMH, learning and cognition, speech and language needs. I am experienced in meeting the student where they are and helping them to be successful, whatever successful means to that individual student. I currently work in a school with 26% SEND, which also house the regional SEND hub. I understand that a diagnosis doesn't define the needs of the person, and that there is always someone who deserves to be met as a person before anything else.

A bit about me

Having worked in education as long as I have, there is very little that can phase me, and I take everything in my stride. I am not a shouty person, and am very calm. I am a supportive teacher, who can read the room, and knows when a push is needed, but also when a break is required. My mantra with the students I work with is 'mistakes is how you learn', and I stick to that.

My teaching philosophy

Teaching is only successful if it focuses on the student in front of you. It needs to be planned around the needs, and wants, of the student. Whether that be in formal academic learning, or in careers and guidance work, the most successful sessions is where the student has ownership of what is happening. This could be about the direction of learning (for example, in a careers and guidance session, if the student is not interested in a certain career, or path into a career, then we explore what they do have an interest in), or how we approach learning (for example, if a student needs frequent movement breaks, or for activities to be broken up into chunks to help them digest what is happening, then I work to their style of learning).

Academic & subject support
Learning & study skills

Subject tutoring focuses on what is being learned (e.g., “I need help with Algebra.”).
Skills coaching focuses on how it is learned (e.g., “I need help getting organised to study for Algebra.”).
