Common patterns we see

In GCSE Chemistry, small details can carry a lot of weight: a unit copied wrongly, a symbol misread, a command word missed. Students with dyslexia may understand the science in class but lose marks when they have to read quickly, select the right information from a question, or record key terms, symbols and equations accurately.

Calm, repeatable practice can make the subject feel less like a race. Simple notes, regular low-pressure review of essential vocabulary and equations, and clear steps for working out what each question is asking can make revision more focused and easier to sustain.

What progress looks like

Slider Left Arrow Slider Right Arrow

01

In GCSE Chemistry, progress often begins when the symbols and wording stop getting in the way of the science your child understands.

02

They slow down over similar-looking chemical names. Sulfate, sulfite and sulfide are checked for their endings, rather than guessed from the first few letters.

03

Copied formulas become more accurate. Your child may pause over details such as Co and CO, recognising that a small change in lettering can change the substance completely.

04

Balancing equations starts to feel more like a routine. They count atoms on both sides of the equation and make changes visibly, instead of trying to keep the whole reaction in their head.

05

Mole or concentration questions are approached with a clearer starting point. They may mark the value they have been given, the value they need to find, and the rule or equation they are going to use before calculating.

06

Visual understanding becomes a way into the writing. They might talk through a particle diagram, bonding model or rates graph first, then use that explanation to shape the written answer.

07

In exam practice, fewer marks are lost through misread command words, copied symbols or missing units, even while the underlying Chemistry is still developing.

08

Some weeks will still feel slower, especially when a topic brings in new vocabulary or dense exam wording. The tutor watches whether reading, copying, checking and answer-building are becoming steadier across sessions, and shares that pattern in regular reviews.
