Common patterns we see

Functional Skills Numeracy often becomes harder when the maths is wrapped in words. Students with ADHD may manage basic calculations, but skim practical questions, miss key details, or start working before they have chosen the right method. Multi-step money, time and measure tasks can become muddled, especially under exam pressure.

It helps to slow the start of each question: identify what is being asked, take one step at a time, and use quick checks before moving on. Short, clear tasks can support accuracy without making practice feel too heavy.

What progress looks like

01

Functional Skills Numeracy progress is often practical: the learner starts to slow down enough to understand the situation before calculating.

02

They stay with an everyday number task for longer, such as working out change, reading a timetable or comparing prices, without immediately moving away from it.

03

Before starting a multi-step problem, they mark the target of the question. “Total cost”, “difference” or “nearest pound” gives the calculation a clearer direction.

04

Their working out becomes easier to follow. Numbers are less scattered across the page, and money, measures, time or percentages are set out in a more consistent layout.

05

They begin to check whether an answer makes sense in real life. For example, £3.50 change from a £5 note is possible, but £35 is not.

06

Prompts, timers, breaks or visual reminders are used more actively during tutor sessions. The aim is not perfect focus, but a way back into the calculation after attention has shifted.

07

Numeracy progress can come in patches, with some sessions feeling much smoother than others. The tutor follows the overall trend through regular progress reviews, rather than treating one flat week as the whole story.
