Common patterns we see

Functional Skills Literacy can look straightforward on paper while still placing heavy demands on attention. Students with ADHD may have strong verbal skills, but rush or skip instructions, miss details in a task, or find written work difficult to sustain through to the end. Exam nerves can make timing and focus feel harder to manage at the same time.

It helps when each task has a simple order to follow and a clear finish point. Short, practical reading and writing activities linked to real-world situations can make practice more purposeful, while a steady routine lowers the barrier to getting started.

What progress looks like

01

With Functional Skills Literacy, the most useful signs are often practical ones: understanding the task, shaping the response, and finishing with a little more control.

02

A short real-world text, such as a letter or notice, is read for its main purpose. The learner may not catch every detail yet, but they can identify what it is asking them to do.

03

Before starting a writing task, they name the audience. “This is an email to a manager” gives the work a clear anchor and can change the opening line straight away.

04

They underline information as they read when a question asks for two details from a text. This reduces the pressure of trying to hold everything in mind at once.

05

At the end of a task, they read their own writing back aloud, even just once. The important change is that the work is being checked rather than abandoned the moment it feels finished.

06

They come to a session able to say which task felt hard last time. That shows the work has stayed present between sessions and gives the tutor something specific to build from.

07

Progress in Functional Skills Literacy can be uneven, and a difficult session does not always mean things have gone backwards. The tutor follows the pattern across tasks and reviews this regularly.
