My experience with special educational needs

I have been a teacher for twenty five years and have been a Special Educational Needs Coordinator for twenty of these years. I have worked with children from primary age to sixth form with a wide range of needs including dyslexia, ADHD, Autism, BESD, attachment needs and anxiety. I have and still do take overall responsibility for the progress and happiness of students with additional needs in large secondary schools and have run specialist provisions for children with ASC and Hearing Impairments. I have taught a wide range of subjects including English, History, Geography, Sociology. Functional Skills, Study skills at primary and secondary age and have taught Maths at primary level. I have also taught specific dyscalculia and dyslexia catch up programmes . I understand everyone learns in their own way and have plenty of ideas how to adapt my teaching methods to reach every young person.

A bit about me

I have had lots of experience but more importantly I care and I want to make a real difference to all the young people that I work with. I think its important to be open and honest with students and listen to their needs and what works best for them. I have personal experience of ADHD in my own family and I understand how crucial it is to build successful working relationships with students. Happy children make progress. My passion is to make a real difference and put the needs of every individual student at the heart of every educational decision and make sure that whatever their goal is I have done my very best to help make this their reality.

My teaching philosophy

I work hard to make my lessons engaging and interesting. I use questions to help me understand what my students are secure with, and identify any gaps. I encourage students to recap on previous learning and anticipate the next steps. My teaching philosophy is to metaphorically hold each students hands through the learning process until they are ready to be independent. I see my role as helping each student to visualise their own dreams and then to help them step by step to achieve them.
