My experience with special educational needs

I am currently working in the SEN department of a school in Eastbourne supporting students with learning disabilities. Most of the pupils have been diagnosed with ADHD and some have coexisting conditions like depression and/or anxiety. Through targeted interventions and tailored strategies, I have successfully supported students by building their confidence levels and helping them to achieve their academic goals. Before this, I spent 10 years working at a university where I combined my lecturer role with working in the Student Accessibility Services department supporting students with ADHD, autism, and dyslexia, as well as those with significant physical challenges, including paraplegia and visual impairment. In this role, I delivered both one-to-one sessions and workshops on study skills, organisation, assessment planning, and exam preparation. These combined experiences have improved my ability to create inclusive learning environments.

A bit about me

I have now been working with students as a teacher, coach and tutor for 30 years in schools, colleges and universities both in the UK and abroad. My background combines mainstream teaching support with specialist experience in ADHD and other learning differculties. I’ve also taught students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, as well as learners with both physical and learning difficulties. This has given me the flexibility to adapt my style to each individual, making sure they feel understood and supported. I’ve just completed a PGCert in ADHD from Middlesex University which has given me an in-depth understanding of the biological, psychological and social aspects of ADHD. Currently, I work at a leading independent school in the UK, where I assist students in preparing for their GCSE exams. I tutor pupils with ADHD and autism with the aim of supporting them with their studies.

My teaching philosophy

Importantly, I believe that nothing about learning is fixed and that everyone has the ability to grow and change. The brain is adaptable which means that by getting the right support and using effective strategies, students can make real progress even in areas where they have struggled with before. I like to have a holistic approach which means I look at the whole person not just the subject and consider their strengths, challenges and goals. Building rapport with students is vital and central to my approach to teaching. I think that when students feel respected, listened to, and valued, they are much more open to learning. I aim to create a supportive atmosphere where they feel safe to make mistakes and grow in confidence. Ultimately, my approach is all about understanding the person behind the learner and offering strategies and support that create a strong platform for success.
