My experience with special educational needs

I am a highly experienced and fully qualified English teacher of 17 years and I have tutored many along the way with great success: 95% of my short-term tutees and 100% of my long term tutees achieve their target grade or higher with an average grade improvement of 2.4. I taught a large number of students with SEN in the classroom until recently and have great experience in this area, particularly with those with ASD/ADHD and dyslexia. I am now providing tuition full time, alongside my business. I have been an examiner for the WJEC (Eduqas) for English Language Units 1 and 2 since 2017 and this is the best way to understand how to teach to achieve certain grades and how to specifically answer reading questions and approach writing tasks effectively. I am also an English Literature examiner for AQA. I have experience teaching or tutoring with OCR, Cambridge, WJEC, Eduqas. Some of my current students have SEN and benefit hugely from my expertise and experience, as well as empathy.

A bit about me

My motto is 'You can and you will': I use this and other motivational concepts/quotes to help bolster young people's confidence and self-belief. It has transformed the education and results of many students over the years with some 'less able' students achieving two grades higher than predicted. I use whatever analogy works e.g. comparing football to studying or linking working hard now to working less hard later in life when you can choose your hours and be paid more with the correct education/ experience. My subjects are English and English Literature, although I have also taught Media Studies for many years. My degree is in English Literature but I have taught both subjects throughout my career to those predominantly 11-16. I examine for both English Language units at GCSE level with WJEC and AQA English Literature and it's very rewarding to be so easily able to teach young people how to develop and hone their skills not only for exams but for their life.

My teaching philosophy

My acronyms for helping students remember everything as well as the visual way in which I teach English. There is a misconception that ‘you can’t revise for English’ or it’s a talent rather than a learned skill. Neither is true and I’ve helped thousands of students see this over the last 17 years. My students say that I’m approachable, funny and that I push them to work hard and achieve highly. It all starts with self-belief and developing confidence. 66% of my SEN classes achieved grades C-B (6-7) in recent years. They came to me dejected and felt everyone around them had decided they were never going to achieve highly or attain pass grades but they did! I have helped many students achieve A/A* (8-9) grades also, which is a huge success. Two boys with ASD that I taught in recent years achieved grades B-A in English Literature which was a massive achievement for them as they began school in a specialist unit and weren't expected to be able to access GCSE level.

Stacey is an amazing tutor. She pays great attention to students way of understanding and makes sure to incorporate into her teaching technique. Stacey also makes sure to give open and honest feedback according to the mark-scheme, leaving no room for misunderstanding. She is very kind and caring, making lessons with her to look forward to.

Stacey is an excellent tutor. She has massively helped me gain confidence when preparing for my exams, and has effectively taught me how to structure my responses. Her sessions have been incredibly engaging as a result of her enthusiastic style of teaching. She has also very kindly taken the liberty to provide feedback for my work in between sessions, something that is very valuable close to exams when you don’t have much time. I managed to obtain a grade 9! I would highly recommend, thank you for everything Stacey!

Stacey has made an incredible difference in such a short amount of time preparing my daughter for GSCE ( both English language and English Literature). My daughter has gained a huge amount of confidence and we have already seen an increase in her grades. She has taught her numerous techniques and ways to approach all types of questions. My daughter also says that she is so lovely and patient. I would highly recommend Stacey to anyone!
