My experience with special educational needs

As a Private Tutor and Undergraduate 1:1 Supervisor (Creative Writing), I support many students who have special educational needs. Notable experiences I’ve had include working with Alice (named changed for GDPR reasons) who has ADHD and anxiety. She was very concerned about how to meet her deadline for the Final Major Project (a 12,000-word submission). Her ADHD made it difficult for her to manage her time and organise/prioritise tasks. Alongside helping her create interim deadlines for completing larger sections of the project, I suggested that she try setting three targets per day: one large, one medium and one small e.g. Write 500 words of the creative piece, read a short article for research, book an appointment for study skills. She said that this method made things so much more manageable for her and eased her anxiety about the project considerably. Alice went on to be awarded a First Class Honours for her degree which was a very proud moment for me as her supervisor.

A bit about me

Hello, I'm Natalie: a private tutor, mentor, university lecturer, examiner, published writer and certified poetry therapy facilitator. One of my earliest memories of having anxiety is when I was in Year 7 and being so worried about the homework assignment I had to do that I asked my mum to phone the teacher after school for clarification. When I was a child there was little recognition or support for anxiety, and it is only through developing my own psychological awareness as an adult that I have come to understand it as being part of who I am. It makes me observant, sensitive and self-aware - this I believe makes me a good educator and poet - but it can also make me an over-thinker, fearful of judgement and taking risks. Growing up, I would love to have had a mentor to help me process my anxiety in an educational setting and support me in thriving to my best potential, personally and academically. So this is why I do what I do - to be the person I needed when I was at school.

My teaching philosophy

My approach is person-centred, kind, calm, motivational and empathetic, with an aim to boost confidence, which is vital to academic achievement. I spend time getting to know my students and encourage the practice of English skills within topic areas of personal interest to them. Being mental health and neurodivergence aware, I use the SPELL (Structure, Positive Approaches and Expectations, Empathy, Low arousal and Links) framework and underpin my work with trauma-informed practice, promoting safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration and empowerment as I build a rapport with my students to better support their individual needs. Sessions are therefore bespoke and flexible, learner-focused rather than teacher-led. I'll invite you to discuss what you would like to work on each session and establish the ways in which I can best support you. I can also guide you in setting targets over a course of sessions so that you can meet your aims and manage your study time effectively.

Natalie is helping our autistic son with his English. She is very kind, patient, helpful and professional. Our son enjoys Natalie’s lessons and is excited to see her every week. He has been having lessons with Natalie for 3 years now and his progress has been enormous! Also he is much more confident and happier. Natalie is the best tutor and I highly recommend her.

Natalie is a fantastic tutor with good knowledge of syllabus and exam requirements. She identifies the weaknesses of student and is able to provide precise and effective guidance and instructions which have helped my son to gain insight and confidence in the subject. Natalie is organised and prepared before lessons as always. I am very grateful for Natalie’professional attitude and would highly recommend to her.

Whilst Natalie hasn't taught me as such, her input to my work through editing and overall her warmth, inclusivity, openness to it and encouragement of it suggest to me she will bring all of that to her teaching, recognising individuals.

Natalie has always been supportive and encouraging because she accepts what I have to say or write with an open mind and an open heart. Whilst accepting, she is still able to question in such a way as to enable me to consider options and expand my work where appropriate. Critical help is always constructive. Answering questions and returning marked work is always timely. I always sensed that she was interested in my work and genuinely wanted to enable me to be the best I could.

Natalie is very professional, punctual & an inspiration to those that do not find the English subject naturally as clear as other academic topics. My daughter's confidence not only in English but across other subjects that involve essay writing/answers has improved significantly under Natalie's expert tutelage. The tutoring sessions have meant that she is now focused on structure/content in all subjects along with social interaction also.

Natalie has tutored both of our children. She has been so helpful to our daughter Alice in her second year of A level English Lit Lang and helped her progress from a poor E grade at AS level to a couple of marks off an A grade at A2 level. Alice got so much out of her sessions with Natalie, and the techniques she learnt helped her enormously. She achieved 98% in one of her English papers and we think this is largely due to the analytical approach she had learnt from Natalie. We were so impressed and thankful that we returned for Natalie's support for our son Tom in the run-up to his GCSEs. A very different student to his older sister, he too really enjoyed his sessions with Natalie and got so much out of it. He has gone into his exams confident and felt they went well, so we could ask no more. Thank you so much Natalie for your wonderful approach.

Natalie was an excellent English tutor who quickly understood Georgia's GCSE needs and helped her to develop her skills and confidence. Georgia found the one-to-one weekly sessions very helpful in particular when discussing work done at school and producing a model answer. She also found the application of Natalie's methods to understand and produce a correct interpretation of the question very useful in producing a more improved and appropriate response. Natalie is a very pleasant, calm and approachable tutor. She was very flexible regarding the re-scheduling of sessions when necessary. The homework set each week was very constructive in boosting Georgia's learning. We would fully recommend Natalie's services.

Since having tuition with Natalie, Sophie’s confidence and understanding of both English language and literature has grown immensely. It has also helped with the other subjects she is studying too. Many thanks Natalie.

Natalie was an exceptional mentor for me during the process of creating my FMP. She was easy to talk to about my ideas and process, and provided much-needed information and advice, including background reading and technical insights. I thoroughly enjoyed sharing my ideas with them, especially when I was stuck for choice and they offered new ways for me to think around my creative roadblocks. I am glad to have worked with her.

Working with Natalie was a transformative experience for me. Her knowledge of poetry is matched only by her ability to inspire confidence and creativity. With a gentle yet insightful style, she helped me begin to unlock my own voice, refine my technique, and truly feel the power of my words. Engaging and encouraging, I cannot recommend Natalie enough!

Natalie is self-motivated and diligent, always working to the highest of standards. She has extensive experience supporting students with a range of special education needs, both in class environments and through 1:1 supervision on and offline. Natalie adopts a student-centred approach, adapting her teaching and support methods to the individual student. The feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive in this regard. She is friendly and patient, working well individually or as part of a team.

Natalie is an excellent teacher with a deep understanding of how to support both adults and young people with special educational needs. Her ability to tailor learning experiences to a wide range of skill levels ensures that every individual feels seen and valued. She provides an inclusive environment where each person is nurtured within the group. I have worked with Natalie on two community projects and can attest to her ability to welcome learners and adapt sessions in accordance with their needs.

I've known Natalie and her work for many years, especially in the use of poetry for health and wellbeing. She's warm, empathetic and understands how to convey ideas in an accessible and friendly way. She's also organised, conscientious and her love of language shines through. Highly recommended.
