Martha

My experience with special educational needs

Since graduating from Cambridge University, I have taught a boy with Autism (aged 6) 1-1 full time in a mainstream primary school and I volunteered for Barnardo's during the pandemic, helping teenagers with complex needs. I have also volunteered with the Guidepost's Trust, helping children and teenager's with SEN and mental health problems. I am both Dyslexic and Dyspraxic and received study skills tuition whilst at Cambridge University, which helped me learned how to use my aptitudes and weaknesses to the best of my ability.

A bit about me

Whilst at university, I was Education Officer for The Marlowe Society, running workshops and creating education packs for local schoolchildren. I was also Education Officer for the Cambridge American Stage Tour, running Shakespeare and Improvisation workshops and giving lectures on Antony and Cleopatra at Universities such as Brown and M.I.T. I have been tutoring for the past 9 years and have had great success helping students grow in confidence, improve their exam technique and, in the case of 11+ exams, gain places at their top choice secondary schools. I have also taken a number of residential placements, such as homeschooling a student on Hans Zimmer's world tour. I set up an online tuition company in China, Ludo Tutors, which provides LAMDA Public Speaking and Drama Exams for children, helping them gain communication skills. I am returning to tutoring as I've missed working one-to-one with students.

My teaching philosophy

I aim to make my tutoring sessions as enjoyable, clear and well-tailored to the individual student as possible. I love to listen to my students and to use their feedback to discover what motivates and interests them. Teaching is something I feel I have an aptitude for and I take great pleasure in seeing my tutees succeed. I provide detailed and constructive feedback after every lesson and make sure to mark homework (if set) and communicate in a polite and timely manner with parents and guardians.

My son William and daughter Catherine have been fortunate to receive tutoring from Martha in English for two years. I have been thoroughly impressed by their professionalism, dedication, and the positive impact they have had on my children’s academic progress and confidence. Martha has an exceptional ability to connect with students and create a supportive and engaging learning environment. They are patient, kind, and skilled at tailoring their teaching methods to meet the specific needs of the student. William has consistently looked forward to their tutoring sessions, which speaks volumes about Martha’s ability to make learning enjoyable and approachable. Since working with Martha, I have seen significant improvements in William’s understanding of English and overall performance in school. Beyond academic growth, she has helped foster a greater sense of confidence and enthusiasm for learning in William, This has been truly invaluable for their development. In addition to their teaching skills, Martha is highly reliable and professional. They communicate effectively, are punctual, and always come prepared for each session. Their dedication and genuine care for their students’ success have been evident in every interaction. I wholeheartedly recommend Martha to anyone seeking a skilled, compassionate, and effective tutor.
