My experience with special educational needs
As an experienced mainstream classroom teacher I am used to working with a variety of different pupil needs and differentiating accordingly. I currently teach several students with ASD and others with dyslexia and ADHD.
A bit about me
I form particularly strong working relationships with students dealing with anxiety and/or depression as I am able to use personal experience to normalise feelings and stressors as well as suggest useful strategies. I am extremely organised and am most comfortable when I work in a structured way which is a big support to my students with ASD and ADHD. As an individual recently referred for an ASD assessment myself, I am aware of some of the issues facing students and am keen to offer support and guidance. With a PhD in Life Sciences and a teaching qualification from the University of Oxford, I am definitely a science geek that successfully overcame difficulties, I would love to help others do the same.
My teaching philosophy
My priority when teaching is to build student confidence and resilience. I believe that most pupils, particularly those with SEN, are capable of much more than they think. Boosting their self-belief is sometimes all that is necessary to allow academic success. In addition to this, however, I am a science geek at heart and love sharing my passion with willing learners.

Louise Bowen is a dedicated tutor/teacher that was invested in my success when teaching me IB SL biology throughout my senior years at school. I was quite a handful, but was interested and engaged in her lessons, and thoroughly enjoyed gaining essential skills through her teaching I would recommend Louise to anyone needing that little bit of extra support in biology and chemistry; she is well versed in her specialist subjects and the wellbeing of students.

I had the pleasure of having Dr Bowen for higher biology in person, and I can confidently say she made a huge difference in my academic journey. Her passion for the subjects was clear and made learning genuinely enjoyable. What I appreciated most was her patience and dedication—she always took the time to ensure I had a solid, concrete understanding of each topic before moving on. Her teaching style was clear, adaptable, and tailored to how I learn best. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone looking for support in biology. She made a real impact on my learning and I am truly grateful

Louise was my teacher in high school for 3 years as she taught me nat 5 chemistry and IB biology. I can honestly say that she made my science lessons much more enjoyable (as someone who is not very good at it) . Louise was always exceptionally patient with me when I didn’t understand a thing. She explained concepts clearly without ever making me feel embarrassed or less-than for struggling. She is the most empathetic teacher I have had and I think that’s something that sets her aside from the other ones. Instead of pilling on stress, she cared about how the class was coping. Louise is the kind of teacher who’s not only super witty and kind but whose passion for her work makes you want to learn and do your best! :)
