My experience with special educational needs
I am a qualified teacher and SENCo and have had many years of experience working with a range of different needs and ages. This includes working with children and young people that have anxiety, autism, ADHD, PDA and other needs and disabilities. I worked in a special needs school for a number of years and was Head of Personal and Physical Development whilst I was there. This included me being in charge of ensuring that the pupils personal development needs were being met and leading six subjects: PE, PSHE, Life Skills, Yoga and Fitness, Citizenship and Sensory Skills. I love working with children and young people with additional needs, particularly those that may have felt misunderstood by others around them.
A bit about me
Alongside my teaching career, I grew up in a family that fosters children and young people, many of these children had additional needs. From a young age, it was engrained in me to have a sensitive and inclusive approach to working with people around me and these skills have supported my career from day one. I have always believed that supporting the child as a whole is incredibly important in their development, which I was able to put into motion when I was head of personal development. In previous roles, I have been the key point of contact for many children, as my calm and compassionate way of working has meant that children have wanted to have me as their trusted adult.
My teaching philosophy
I find that relationship building is the best way to approach coaching or teaching. If you can create a safe space, where the young person trusts you, they will strive and progress. It is so important to create a calm environment where they are comfortable to be themselves. Also, I pride myself in being compassionate, kind and flexible in the way I work, ensuring that a pupil-centered approach is taken at all times.
