Katie

My experience with special educational needs

I have over eight years’ experience as a qualified teacher and tutor, working across mainstream schools, private tutoring, and community support roles. Throughout my career I have taught, supported, and created individualised learning plans, EHCPs and delivered these for students with a wide range of special educational needs, including SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health), dyslexia, speech and language difficulties, and other learning barriers. My postgraduate MA in International Education also allowed me to research and deepen my understanding of SEMH within a global education context, shaping my inclusive approach to learning.

A bit about me

Having worked extensively with children facing emotional, behavioural, and social challenges, I understand the importance of patience, empathy, and building trust. I have also experienced my own journey with emotional regulation and resilience, which has given me a deep compassion for learners who may feel “different” or misunderstood in traditional education settings. My tutoring business was built during a time when children and families most needed extra support. This has given me a strong awareness of how to adapt quickly, personalise learning, and keep students motivated, even when they face challenges. Parents often tell me that my understanding, kindness, and structured but flexible approach makes their child feel safe, supported, and confident.

My teaching philosophy

My teaching style is warm, adaptive, and centred on the individual. I believe that every child is capable of thriving when they feel seen, valued, and encouraged. I use creative strategies, humour, and enthusiasm to keep students engaged, while also setting clear goals and celebrating progress. I focus on building strong foundations, both academically and emotionally, so that learners feel empowered rather than pressured. I combine careful assessment with tailored resources, ensuring lessons are both structured and flexible to meet the child where they are. My experience across mainstream, SEN, and SEMH has taught me that progress comes not only from academic teaching, but also from building confidence, resilience, and a love of learning.

Katie is passionate and dedicated. She’s been working with our kids for years now and we couldn’t be happier. She tailors her style to each child and makes the lessons engaging and fun. It’s had a big impact on confidence and progress for all. Thank you Katie!

Katie is truly wonderful. She has helped my children endlessly with their studies over the years, I have been so grateful to watch them grow in confidence as they have been able to tackle tasks, which had previously caused frustration and anxiety, (whether in Maths or English) become effortless through Katie's constant hard work and gentle encouragement. My children love her because she makes their lessons fun and engaging.

I have seen such progress with my daughter (8yo) in both English and maths. Katie has been amazing - creating a tailored learning plan with clear homework assignments and follow-ups and making every lesson super engaging and fun. A huge thank you!

Katie is an exceptional tutor. Her sessions are thoughtful, personalised, and incredibly effective. My daughter has made noticeable progress in English, especially in her writing and confidence. Katie’s clear explanations, expert planning, and supportive manner make all the difference. We feel very fortunate to work with her, highly recommended

Our family has worked with Katie since 2020 when she saved our children’s education during lockdown, right at the beginning of her tutor journey. Her ability to build a rapport, her kindness and sense of fun (when needed) has meant our children have always looked forward to seeing her. Our now burgeoning teenagers continue to benefit from Katie’s ability to identify and focus on the areas where they need support, and to teach in a way which gets through. We have seen their confidence and their results go from strength to strength. Our elder child has also benefited from Katie’s ability to select excellent tutors to work alongside her and to follow her methods as the curriculum advances. She has also grown a very impressive business over the years that has taught dozens of children we know. We can’t thank her enough for all she has done for our children (and for us) over the years.

Katie was so intuitive, thorough and resourceful that she managed to come up with a set of very successful strategies in no time. That led to countless A* for my daughter's GCSEs. We are immensely grateful. And we therefore highly recommend her services!

I booked Katie to help my daughter through the 6 weeks holiday after she got put on a SEN plan through her school, Katie has bought her on amazingly even her teachers cannot believe the difference in her just of 6 weeks of tutoring, she explained everything in a simple manner which she understood and everything just clicked with her. Katie is still supporting her with her learning and she is doing amazing thanks to Katie’s help.

Katie has worked wonders with our daughter to help grow her confidence in maths and more recently, English. Our daughter is neurodivergent and Katie has adapted her lessons to manage her executive function challenges well. In fact our daughter achieved a score of over 110 in her SATs so we couldn’t have been happier. Our daughter didn’t want to say goodbye to Katie after primary school so she now focusses on English while another member of her team teaches maths for KS3. Katie has always been so kind and supportive and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her services. She makes a difference!

I look forward to my lessons with Katie. When we learn, we sometimes learn with songs which is fun. To help my focus, she gives me brain breaks. She has helped me with my multiplication. Lessons with Katie are brilliant. In English, it is so much fun.

Katie is extremely professional, always on time, and consistently responsive. I trust that she will always be there and give her very best in every lesson. She is also very understanding when I have work or time pressures and is always flexible and cooperative. In addition, my son has ADHD, and she has been genuinely successful in keeping him engaged throughout the entire lesson.
