My experience with special educational needs
I have over eight years’ experience as a qualified teacher and tutor, working across mainstream schools, private tutoring, and community support roles. Throughout my career I have taught, supported, and created individualised learning plans, EHCPs and delivered these for students with a wide range of special educational needs, including SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health), dyslexia, speech and language difficulties, and other learning barriers. My postgraduate MA in International Education also allowed me to research and deepen my understanding of SEMH within a global education context, shaping my inclusive approach to learning.
A bit about me
Having worked extensively with children facing emotional, behavioural, and social challenges, I understand the importance of patience, empathy, and building trust. I have also experienced my own journey with emotional regulation and resilience, which has given me a deep compassion for learners who may feel “different” or misunderstood in traditional education settings. My tutoring business was built during a time when children and families most needed extra support. This has given me a strong awareness of how to adapt quickly, personalise learning, and keep students motivated, even when they face challenges. Parents often tell me that my understanding, kindness, and structured but flexible approach makes their child feel safe, supported, and confident.
My teaching philosophy
My teaching style is warm, adaptive, and centred on the individual. I believe that every child is capable of thriving when they feel seen, valued, and encouraged. I use creative strategies, humour, and enthusiasm to keep students engaged, while also setting clear goals and celebrating progress. I focus on building strong foundations, both academically and emotionally, so that learners feel empowered rather than pressured. I combine careful assessment with tailored resources, ensuring lessons are both structured and flexible to meet the child where they are. My experience across mainstream, SEN, and SEMH has taught me that progress comes not only from academic teaching, but also from building confidence, resilience, and a love of learning.
