My experience with special educational needs

I tutor exclusively online and have extensive experience supporting students with a wide range of needs, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, anxiety, trauma, Tourette’s, PDA, OCD, PTSD, epilepsy, sensory processing challenges, and speech and language difficulties. I work with all children and young people, not just those with diagnosed conditions, and help each one reach their potential in a way that suits them. Many students come to me after struggling elsewhere, and I am known for helping them thrive, often for the first time. I adapt to each learner’s pace and preferences, offer structured and consistent support, and build trust, confidence, and self-belief. All lessons are fully tailored and recorded for reinforcement. Wast majority of students I support make meaningful progress, academically and emotionally, with consistent praise from students, parents and carers.

A bit about me

I’m a highly experienced tutor and mentor with a long-standing background in education, leadership, and charity work. I have worked with students of all ages and abilities, including those with a wide range of special educational needs. I approach every learner with genuine care, clarity, and calm authority. I offer a safe, structured space where students feel understood, respected, and encouraged to succeed. I never rush or talk down to students. My methods are grounded in mutual trust, careful observation, and consistent listening and observing. I’ve supported learners from all backgrounds, from those out of school to Oxbridge applicants, and I try to help each one to feel capable, confident, focused, and in control.

My teaching philosophy

I believe that effective education begins with creating a space where every student feels safe, capable, and genuinely heard. My approach is fully individualised and tailored, combining structure, empathy, listening and agility. I provide clear explanations, calm delivery, and a strong routine. I try to build trust quickly, especially with students who have previously lost confidence. I always prepare thoroughly, communicate clearly, and adapt instinctively in real time. I keep lessons focused and interactive, always adjusting to a student’s needs, but always smuggle in interaction and them feeling in control. The difference for my students is not just better grades, but restored confidence, which always results in better grades and a confident and satisfied student.

Julia’s kindness and compassion meant a great deal as daughter was struggling with various issues through her A-Levels. During the invaluable time spent with Julia we saw our daughter’s confidence grow alongside her academic achievements due to Julia’s professional ongoing support and encouragement.

Julia really made the difference to my daughter's approach to studying. She give her valuable resources and was extremely patient. We are very hopeful Julia's impact will have a positive effect on her final grade.

Julia has been a wonderful photography tutor for me and my 13-year-old daughter over the past six months. As complete beginners, we’ve really appreciated her kind, warm, and patient approach. She has a real gift for teaching, asking thoughtful questions, giving constructive feedback, and tailoring each lesson to suit both an adult and a teenager's interests. Her passion for photography and teaching really shines through. She’s also been flexible and responsive, which has made the experience all the more enjoyable. We’ve already learned so much and always look forward to our sessions with her!

Julia has been absolutely amazing with our son James. She’s not only helped him enjoy English and perform well in his mocks, but also brought out a deeper understanding and confidence in his writing. With her support, James started genuinely enjoying both literature and language, even though he was very goo and had good grades, analysis is something we hadn’t done at all before, not to that sophisticated level he learnt with Julia. What stood out most was how flexible and supportive Julia was throughout. She always adjusted her schedule to fit around James’s needs, even when things changed last minute. Nothing was ever too much trouble, and she consistently went above and beyond to make sure he felt supported. We’re so grateful for all Julia has done and are hoping to return to her again in the autumn for A level support, especially as James is planning to take writing-heavy subjects. We truly believe working with Julia has made a real difference in his learning and confidence. We can’t recommend her enough.

I was so thrilled to get an A in my History paper, I couldn’t believe it! Working with Julia made such a difference. She helped me understand how to structure my arguments, develop my ideas in depth, and actually enjoy the subject. I always felt supported, and her feedback was clear, encouraging, and thoughtful. When it came time to start my NEA, I didn’t hesitate to reach out again because I knew I was in safe hands. Julia was always calm, flexible, and kind, the sessions were focused but never stressful. I really appreciated how much she believed in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself yet.

I’m incredibly grateful for the work Julia has done with my daughter in preparation for her A-Level Business exams. Audrey’s confidence has noticeably increased, and that alone speaks volumes about the impact of their sessions. Julia is not only professional and responsive but also truly caring and invested in her students success. She identified Audrey’s needs ahead of a critical paper and thoughtfully suggested extra support, which made all the difference. I can wholeheartedly recommend her to any parent seeking a tutor who brings both expertise and genuine care to every lesson. Vicky, Audrey’s mum (A-Level Business student)
