My experience with special educational needs
I’ve worked with students who have struggled with focus, organisation and confidence, particularly around exam pressure and managing workload. While I’m not a specialist in one specific diagnosis, I’ve supported students with ADHD-type traits, anxiety around performance, and difficulties with time management. I try to break content down into smaller, manageable steps and build structure into sessions so students feel less overwhelmed. I also spend time helping them plan revision realistically and develop strategies that work for them individually, rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach. A big part of what I focus on is building trust and making students feel comfortable asking questions without worrying about getting things wrong.
A bit about me
I’m Immi, and I’ve recently completed a Master’s degree in Space Engineering, following a Bachelor's in Chemistry. I’ve always loved science and problem-solving, but I also really enjoy helping others build confidence in subjects they might find intimidating. I’m patient, calm, and I understand that everyone learns differently. Outside of tutoring, I play the piano and love running. Both are a big part of how I switch off and reset. I think having interests beyond academics helps me relate to students as whole people, not just as learners, and I try to create sessions that feel supportive and relaxed rather than pressured.
My teaching philosophy
My approach is structured but flexible. I like to break topics down into small, manageable steps and check understanding regularly, rather than moving on too quickly. For students with SEN, feeling overwhelmed can be a big barrier, so I focus on making progress feel achievable. I also try to understand how each student thinks and processes information. Some need more visual explanations, some benefit from repetition, and others need help with planning and organisation as much as the subject content itself. I think building confidence is just as important as covering material. Where helpful, I’ll also work on practical strategies like time management, revision planning, and how to approach exam questions, so students leave sessions with tools they can use independently.
