My experience with special educational needs
I have worked with children with ADHD, SEMH and Physical disabilities. This was through my work as a science teacher, an assistant head of year and through alternative provision tutoring. When working with SEND students the most important aspect is developing a strong and trusting relationship. It’s not only about their academic performance; I want students to be seen, supported and confident in managing their social interactions and their mental health. Recently, I have worked with a student who has been out of school for 3 years due to her mental health. During her first lesson, she walked in and struggled to even talk; we worked on building a trusting relationship by finding commonalities and worked on her mindset. During results day she achieved a 9/9! I believe everyone has this potential, it starts with within!
A bit about me
My name is Harminda, I am a twin brother, I love going to the gym and I believe gratitude is the best attitude. My purpose and passion involve making a positive difference to others. I am very fascinated by science, especially Biology. The mechanism of life and survival is extraordinary. I have travelled to around 22 countries; this allowed me to appreciate the importance of education and its impact on future generations. I am also very empathetic and understand the pressures teenagers face in the classroom. I look forward to the challenge of teaching as the rewards are a blessing. I am a fully qualified science teacher with a Human Biology degree. I have over six years of experience, teaching Science to secondary school students in the classroom and as a tutor. I have a passion for motivating and inspiring students with a smile. My aim as a tutor, is to allow students to achieve their full potential.
My teaching philosophy
I became a tutor because I genuinely love helping others learn in a way that makes sense to them. My personality naturally leans toward being empathetic, patient, and encouraging. As a conscientious and reflective tutor, I ensure my lessons are stimulating, challenging and dynamic. I understand the pressures of being in a classroom and the expectations faced at schools. My lessons include a pinch of humour and real-life examples, which students find relatable. All my lessons are planned from scratch and are in line with the specifications. My lessons include exam-style questions and mark schemes to tackle common misconceptions. The potential for students is limitless and I am looking forward to this journey.

Harminda is the most warm, understanding and personable tutor you’d ever wish for your child to work with. His professional knowledge is second to none and his resources are accessible and challenging. We highly recommend him as an integral support for any yr 11 science students working towards their terminal exams, but also as a truly good and positive role model and person. We will miss seeing him weekly now exams are over! Xx

Mr Surana is a brilliant tutor and has helped my daughter gain confidence & knowledge across all three sciences. His enthusiasm and caring nature make him an ideal tutor for students struggling as well as for those who are needing an extra personalised push to get a Grade 9. Mr Surana’s teaching style enables students to feel at ease even when the lesson content is more challenging. He asks what the student wants to focus on and provides guidance for follow up work they can do independently prior to their next session. We were lucky to find such a perfect science tutor to support with my daughter’s GCSEs and will definitely be recommending him to our friends.

My son’s confidence going into his exams this week and last week has been so good to see. He has come on so quickly with your support thank you. Knowledge gaps and any difficulties in applying knowledge have been quickly addressed and he’s sure he’s jumped a few grades since the mocks with your support.
