My experience with special educational needs
I have over 30 years of experience supporting students with a wide variety of special educational needs. I now work primarily as a special needs teacher in an alternative provision supporting children and young people with autism who are not currently learning in a school setting. Throughout my career, I have worked in primary, middle and secondary settings and taught up to GCSE and Functional Skills level. I am happy to work both online and face to face. I have experience and expertise with the following special educational needs: Social, emotional and mental health challenges (SEMH), physical impairments, specific learning difficulties (SpLD) and neurodivergent learning needs such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, attention deficit disorder (ADHD) and autism (ASD).
A bit about me
I really love my job and enjoy the challenge of providing the best learning and coaching support for my students every day. Your individual learning needs and preferences are the bedrock of how I start to plan my support. I take time to find out about your personal interests and preferred learning styles and implement these in each lesson taught. I am friendly, positive and have a good sense of humour. I have many years of educational experience which will help guide and support you through new challenges. I really value the importance of positive relationships and supporting your specific needs to provide you with the best learning experiences possible. Away from teaching I enjoy spending time on the river (paddle boarding and kayaking), walking my dog and relaxing with family, friends and pets.
My teaching philosophy
Making the learning and coaching process fun and relevant to you is my signature approach for your learning journey. Developing confidence and self-efficacy will be my primary focus for supporting your specific needs. I always take time to get to know your interests, motivations and personal preferences and build a supportive curriculum around them. Developing a positive and respectful relationship with you will allow you to have a real voice in the progress of your learning. I love exploring new concepts through a variety of approaches and always strive to provide you with many varied and enjoyable experiences to engage your interest and improve your targeted outcomes.
