My experience with special educational needs
I have been supporting learners with a variety of special educational needs for over 11 years, focusing on helping teenagers pass GCSE maths in addition to teaching university students general study skills including essay writing, organisation and time management, assistive technology and learning strategies. In 2023, I gained a L5 Dyslexia/SpLD tutoring qualification and I am currently studying towards a L7 Dyslexia assessing qualification. I've recently finished an Executive Function Coaching course and will be incorporating these strategies into lessons with students of all ages. I enjoy partaking in additional CPD and training and typically attend between 15-20 hours of SEND-specific CPD sessions per year and regularly attend SEND conferences around England. I have been teaching assistive technology for 7 years and enjoy learning about new software that can enhance the experiences of students in secondary school, college and university.
A bit about me
I graduated with a BSc Mathematics degree from Plymouth University and, since then, have worked in many one-to-one student support roles. I live on the edge of the New Forest and have two fabulous rescue cats, Thor (tuxedo) & RoRo (black cat). I thoroughly enjoy summertime beach days to get the paddleboards on the water and enjoy the (sporadic) British sunshine! I really enjoy board games, playing sandbox games such as Minecraft and building Lego sets. I'm a member of a neurodiverse family myself and I use my lived experience to enhance my tutoring and coaching by suggesting specific and trusted strategies.
My teaching philosophy
I frequently work with KS3 & KS4 students who have EHCPs and homeschoolers, focusing on making learning interesting, engaging and fulfilling, with relevant syllabus links. I often support students with Specific Learning Differences (SpLDs), Autism and ADHD, focusing on a strengths-based and student-centred approach to learning. I have a patient, calm and friendly approach that helps me to connect with students and link their interests with the lessons I deliver.

Alice is fantastic! She is patient, kind, knowledgeable and makes learning fun. My daughter is autistic and was really hating Maths. Alice, as her Maths Tutor, has changed her perception and made my daughter feel as if she can have a go. She's just sat her GCSE mocks and thinks they went very well. I can't thank Alice enough for being so patient and understanding my daughter's needs (such as needing signposting what's going to happen and offering regular breaks etc).
