My experience with special educational needs
I have been a specialist dyslexia and literacy teacher in a secondary school for over a decade. My role ranges from specialist literacy support with a phonics based programme to study skills and examination access arrangement assessments. In my previous school, as second in the English department, I also taught A level English literature and general studies as well as KS3 and GCSE. Having tutored for almost two decades, I've worked with students from primary school to A levels. Whilst my specialism is dyslexia, I have worked with students across the SEND spectrum in addition to anxiety and those facing medical and physical challenges. There's nothing better than hearing from parents, or even the students themselves, about future successes after they graduate from tuition.
A bit about me
Coming from a family with a strong history of dyslexia, I've seen the challenges and strengths that such a profile presents. Witnessing the enormous difference that the right support at the right time can have on enabling a student to achieve their full potential and exceed their own expectations is always a privilege.
My teaching philosophy
Confidence is key. I use a range of approaches to ensure that my students are equipped to learn as effectively as possible. My masters in SEND focused on the use of multisensory strategies to support memory. This developed knowledge that I use to benefit all of my students. Ultimately, my aim is to equip students with a tool kit of strategies which they are able to use independently and apply in their education and future.
