My experience with special educational needs
As a fully qualified teacher with over 8+ years experience, I have extensive experience delivering the Maths and Music National Curriculum to SEND learners within the classroom, in small groups and 1 to 1 sessions. I have a strong passion for working with learners who may feel nervous or anxious, those with neurodiversity, special educational needs, and individuals who lack confidence and enthusiasm. Having faced similar challenges in my own journey, my goal is to be the teacher I always needed. I strive to be empathetic, patient, fun, engaging, and supportive, creating an environment where you feel safe and supported to be your true authentic. I am committed to explain concepts in as many different ways as possible until you ‘really’ get it! which is evident in this recent feedback from a parent of one of my current KS4 students who has autism: “She was buzzing - You really booster her confidence”.
A bit about me
Originally from Australia, I have lived in the UK for over 18 years, studying Music and performing as a professional trumpeter in the Coldstream Guards and Scots Guards Bands. After an exciting career in music, I became a teacher to inspire, nurture, and provide the support I wished I had when I was younger. Diagnosed with combined-type ADHD later in life, I now understand the challenges neurodiverse learners face. I am passionate about being the teacher I always needed—one who builds strong relationships, adapts learning to individual needs, and delivers engaging, SEN-focused support. My commitment to students was recognised with a ‘Highly Commended’ award for Pearson’s Teacher of the Year 2022.
My teaching philosophy
Every student deserves a learning experience tailored to their unique needs. I make lessons engaging, interactive, and adaptable, breaking down concepts in ways that truly resonate. I create a safe, supportive, and patient environment where students feel valued and confident to take risks. Building strong, trusting relationships is at the heart of my teaching. My sessions are structured yet flexible, incorporating movement, discussion, and varied learning methods. Using proven SEN strategies like scaffolding and multisensory learning, I empower students with tools that boost both their education and self-confidence Above all, I want every student to feel seen, heard, and celebrated for who they truly are. I am committed to being the teacher who not only supports their academic success but also helps them embrace their true, authentic selves with confidence.

Stephanie was fantastic. She helped my son with not only with his maths but also his confidence. With her help he managed to get the maths grade he needed.

My daughter has made noticeable progress in both her confidence and her understanding of maths, and a big part of that is thanks to Steph’s ability to connect with her in such a relatable and encouraging way. It’s clear that Steph not only knows the subject well but also understands how to teach it with empathy and a real awareness of what approaches work best for each student. It’s been so encouraging to see my daughter go from struggling to actually feeling happy and ready to give her exams a go - a change we’re incredibly grateful for.

We are now on a Cruise for our holiday and my daughter Alyria, (who is loving her Maths sessions so much), has refused to miss her Maths session with Steph on the cruise. Back in Covid, Alyria’s experience with online tutoring wasn’t the best. She would dread going online as the sessions were dry and boring. She absolutely adores the way Steph delivers the learning as it’s fun and she finally understands Maths in a way that she can actually understand. I have never seen her so engaged & focused! What a positive experience. - Nicole N

Steph is a fantastic tutor! My son has gone from hating maths, to looking forward his weekly tutorials with Steph. She makes the lessons enjoyable and fun. She ensures that he understands what is going on and will then push him to the next level, challenging him with more difficult questions. We have been so impressed with Steph that we have recommended her to friends. Thank you!

My daughter felt very happy with the session and felt very at ease with Steph. We could tell afterwards that she was already feeling better about her Maths and Steph explained things to her in a really positive way. Thank you very much.

She has been feeling so much more confident since having your sessions and your encouraging and relatable approach made all the difference to her. It's been such a relief to see her happy to have a go at a subject that used to be a source of great stress. Thank you for being so patient, supportive, and kind.
