My experience with special educational needs
I have developed extensive experience supporting children, young people, and adults with Special Educational Needs (SEN) across a wide range of settings, including schools, foster homes, community programs, and one-to-one tuition. My work has involved creating and delivering tailored lesson plans in core subjects such as English and Maths, adapting resources to meet individual learning needs, and supporting students in building confidence, independence, and resilience. Through roles with Reed Education and Teacher Active, I have worked closely with both mainstream and SEN learners, designing lessons that cater to varied abilities while fostering creativity, collaboration, and engagement. Alongside my teaching roles, I have been deeply involved in community and therapeutic projects. As a SEN workshop leader with Allies Mid Devon and a facilitator with Colab Exeter, I developed and delivered art and creative sessions tailored to individual needs. These experiences allowed me to use my
A bit about me
I have spent many years supporting children, young people, and adults with Special Educational Needs (SEN) through both professional teaching roles and community projects. My approach is always person-centred—I take time to understand each individual’s strengths, challenges, and interests so that I can create sessions that feel engaging, supportive, and uplifting. Whether I am teaching academic subjects like Maths and English, or running creative and therapeutic art workshops, my focus is on building confidence and creating a safe space where learners can thrive. Through my voluntary work, I have seen first-hand how creativity can bring people together and support emotional well-being. At Allies Mid Devon, I designed and led SEN-friendly workshops tailored to each participant’s needs, making sure everyone could express themselves positively. I also helped organise fundraising events at the local market, where clients proudly showcased and sold their handmade products to raise money
My teaching philosophy
My approach to teaching and coaching is rooted in the principles of the THRIVE model, which emphasises emotional well-being as the foundation for learning and growth. I believe that before any academic or skill-based progress can take place, learners need to feel safe, supported, and valued. By creating an environment that prioritises trust, connection, and positive relationships, I am able to help students develop the confidence and resilience they need to engage fully in their learning journey. I enjoy using creativity, art, and practical activities as tools to help learners express themselves and regulate their emotions. This not only supports their personal development but also makes learning more enjoyable and accessible. Whether I am working one-to-one with a young person who struggles with traditional classroom settings or leading a group workshop, I focus on building emotional literacy, resilience, and a sense of achievement—key elements of the THRIVE approach.

Emily has been a star When Liam started he was very behind, frustrated and alot of upset. He sparked as soon as he was about to start his school day. With Emily's friendly caring manner, time wasn't an issue he did it at his pace, and completed his weeks of learning with no hassle or stress. I can not thank you enough for letting Liam thrive with you, it has been an honor to listen and watch my boy finally get to his goals Liam is alot calmer In himself and thriving in his new education with needs. Emily thank you so much hun i wish u all the best on you're next student 💗 xxx

Emily is an outstanding online teacher who has a remarkable ability to connect with students across a wide age range, from early learners to teenagers. She combines professionalism with warmth, creating a safe, engaging, and motivating environment where students genuinely want to learn. For younger learners, Emily brings patience, creativity, and fun to every lesson. She uses interactive activities, storytelling, and positive encouragement to hold their attention, making even challenging topics feel approachable and exciting. With older students, Emily demonstrates a unique balance of guidance and independence. She explains concepts clearly, encourages critical thinking, and fosters confidence in her students. Her ability to adapt her teaching style ensures that each student feels supported, whether they are building foundational skills or preparing for advanced challenges. Parents consistently praise Emily for her communication and reliability. She provides thoughtful feedback, celebrates progress, and works in partnership with families to support each child’s goals. Students often describe her as kind, approachable, and inspiring — someone who makes learning not just effective, but enjoyable. In short, Emily is a fantastic online teacher whose dedication, adaptability, and genuine passion for education make her an invaluable mentor for students aged 6–18.

I have had the pleasure of working alongside Emily at Alternative Provision, where she held the dual role of Manager and Teacher. During this time, I witnessed firsthand her exceptional ability to balance leadership responsibilities with direct teaching, consistently creating a safe and stimulating environment that promotes learning for children of all ages. Emily demonstrated remarkable skill in team management and staff development, recruiting and guiding colleagues to deliver high-quality educational activities. Emily took great care in updating parents and carers on children’s progress and acted as a vital link between the school and families, always communicating with sensitivity and professionalism. Emily’s commitment to safeguarding was exemplary, ensuring that child protection regulations were rigorously met and that any concerns were promptly reported to the DSL or Directors. As a manager, Emily efficiently oversaw budgeting, record-keeping, and activity planning, ensuring that all equipment and resources were well maintained and that learning spaces were consistently clean, organised, and welcoming. Her proactive approach to problem-solving—whether resolving disputes between children, supervising breaks and lunchtimes, or encouraging positive behaviour—contributed greatly to the smooth running of the centre. Alongside managerial duties, Emily took an active role in teaching and curriculum delivery, organising and leading weekly sessions for reception, primary, and secondary (post-16) students. She successfully delivered exam learning objectives for Entry Level 1–3 and Functional Skills Levels 1 and 2 in English and Maths, as well as other open award subjects, including registering pupils for exams and ensuring accurate administration. Her dedication extended beyond the classroom, from maintaining business vehicles and the school building to participating in weekly and monthly meetings with other centre managers and directors across the South West. This level of commitment and versatility made Emily an invaluable asset to both staff and students. In every aspect of their role, Emily displayed professionalism, empathy, and an unwavering focus on the well-being and success of the children in their care. I would not hesitate to recommend her for any future teacher or educational managerial position.
