My experience with special educational needs
In the nine years I've been tutoring, I've worked with many students that have SEN diagnoses, including dyslexia, dyspraxia and ASD. As I specialise in English, I understand how students with SEN may find a writing-based subject very challenging, and am experienced in accounting for this as a tutor. I was also formally trained in working with SEN individuals during a psychology placement I undertook in Sri Lanka [2018].
A bit about me
Hi, my name's Becky. I've worked as a tutor since 2015. I teach all subjects at KS1 level, and specialise in teaching English at any level. I also work as a writer (which might help explain why I love teaching English!). I enjoy the challenge of helping students engage with a subject that may not be their favourite, especially in cases where they begin to become interested in a particular text or find personal expression through creative writing.
My teaching philosophy
I adapt my teaching style based on the personality and needs of each individual student. Having dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia myself, I have first-hand experience of how SEN diagnoses can make it challenging to navigate a learning environment designed for neurotypical students, and aim to provide something different for my students by tailoring our lessons specifically to them as an individual. I also like to take a relaxed approach to lessons who have often just done a full day of school, balancing this with pre-planning and focus to ensure our goals are met.
