My experience with special educational needs

I have been a primary school teacher for the last 13 years, been SENDCO for 4 years and I have worked across all 3 Key Stages in the Primary Phase. During that time I have developed a thorough understanding of how children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities can be best supported and provided for. I can confidently draw on my own personal experiences when supporting children with Autism, visual and hearing impairments, ADD and ADHD plus a wide range of other specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia and sensory processing disorder. Forming strong relationships with pupils and their families is something which I believe to be fundamental. Using tact and a positive approach, I operate with empathy and professionalism. I know that communication and trust underpin positive outcomes, and this applies in communication with everyone; children, parents, carers and outside agencies.

A bit about me

I am a proud mum to a four year old son who has taught me the true meaning of life. I know how important our children are to us and for me, life's greatest gift is our child's happiness. During my own education I have achieved successful results through hard work, dedication and a strong support network around me. I completed A Levels in Maths, English and Art and received a first class honours degree in Primary Education. As a teacher, it has not only been important for me to ensure that children progress academically; it has been equally crucial to support children in their personal, social, moral and spiritual growth. I hold high expectations of all children and believe that it is essential to encourage confidence and self-belief in young people and their families so that there are always high expectations and aspirations for children, whatever their barriers to learning might be.

My teaching philosophy

I fully believe that everyone learns and interacts in ways unique to themselves and it is important to find the style and techniques that will most benefit them as an individual. My teaching experience thus far has enabled me to develop a plethora of styles to suit a variety of learning needs and abilities. I am patient, caring and understanding with clear boundaries, high expectations and an end goal in mind. Although my experience is primarily in the Primary Phase (I have taught adults also), I am confident that many of my techniques, strategies and teaching styles are transferable to older ages.
