My experience with special educational needs
I have over 20 year's experience of teaching and supporting learners with additional needs including: dyslexia, ASD, SEMH, ADHD and anxiety. I am a qualified English teacher with a previous leadership role in a special needs department in a high school. I have also worked as an SPLD lecturer for a large college and university centre, where I combined another role as specialist mentor for students with ASD. For several years, I have specialised in one to one tuition, which allows me to focus on individual needs and build positive relationships with students. I have taught a wide variety of individuals from primary aged children to adults.
A bit about me
I am a friendly, approachable person with a good sense of humour, and a positive attitude to teaching and learning. I have a daughter with additional needs, who is now in her 20's, so I understand some of the challenges facing children, young people (and their parents) in today's society, particularly in relation to the barriers they can face in the education system. My primary aim is to help students to overcome their individual barriers in order to reach their potential in education.
My teaching philosophy
I have a flexible, student-centered approach to teaching, adapting my methods to suit each student's needs, always prioritising their well-being and happiness. I strive to build positive relationships with every individual I teach, aiming to better understand their needs, make sessions enjoyable, remove barriers to engagement, and help both students and parents/carers achieve their goals. I believe in positive reinforcement, offering praise and rewards, to inspire self-confidence and a love for learning that will last for life!
