My experience with special educational needs
I have extensive experience working with students with special educational needs (SEN), including those with autism, dyslexia, ADHD, learning difficulties, and impaired speech and sight (KS2 level). I have successfully supported students with dyslexia, helping them improve from a predicted grade 3 to grades 6 and 7, and worked with a student with autism to move from a predicted grade 3 to a grade 6. My experience has involved adapting teaching methods to suit individual learning needs, using a range of strategies to support literacy development, comprehension, and analytical skills.
A bit about me
I personally struggled with anxiety both in school and during university, so I understand how difficult it can be to learn effectively when faced with additional challenges. This experience has made me particularly empathetic towards students who need extra support, and I always strive to create a learning environment where they feel comfortable, understood, and confident in their abilities.
My teaching philosophy
I believe in adapting lessons to suit the individual needs of my students, ensuring that they feel supported and engaged. However, generally lessons will follow the key points below to build confidence and reinforce learning: Explain – Introduce key concepts to build a solid foundation. Demonstrate – Show correct and incorrect examples, discussing why they work or don’t. Recap – Summarise key points to reinforce learning. Correct Examples – Students identify and fix mistakes. Practise – Students apply their knowledge independently. This structured approach ensures students understand, retain, and confidently use what they’ve learned.
