My experience with special educational needs
I have extensive experience working with students with special educational needs across various settings. I have worked at an SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) school, where I supported students with complex emotional and behavioural challenges, helping them develop coping strategies and fostering a positive learning environment. Additionally, I have supported students with specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, by implementing tailored interventions, assistive technologies, and differentiated teaching methods to meet their individual needs. My experience also includes teaching SEND students both in traditional school settings and online, which has allowed me to adapt my approach to suit diverse learning environments and ensure accessibility for all learners. This background has equipped me with the skills to create inclusive, supportive, and effective learning experiences for students with a wide range of needs.
A bit about me
I have a deep passion for supporting students with special educational needs, and my experience spans working at an SEMH school, assisting students with learning difficulties like dyslexia, and teaching SEND students both in school and online. I’m currently tutoring a student with ADHD, and I’m incredibly proud to share that he is now on track to pass his GCSEs this year—a testament to the tailored support and strategies we’ve implemented together. Outside of teaching, I enjoy writing, music, and baking, which help me bring creativity and patience into my work. My personal and professional experiences have given me a strong understanding of the unique challenges and strengths of SEND learners, and I’m committed to creating a supportive, inclusive, and empowering environment for every student I work with.
My teaching philosophy
My approach to teaching and coaching follows the communicative teaching method, which focuses on meaningful interaction and real-life communication as the foundation for learning. I prioritise building strong, trusting relationships with my students, as I believe this is key to creating a supportive and effective learning environment. By understanding each student’s individual needs, strengths, and challenges, I tailor my lessons to suit their unique learning styles. This might involve adapting materials, incorporating their interests, or using specific strategies to keep them engaged and motivated. For example, in my current role tutoring a student with ADHD, I’ve used a flexible and interactive approach that has helped him stay focused and achieve his goals—he’s now on track to pass his GCSEs this year. My aim is to empower students by making learning accessible, enjoyable, and relevant to their lives.
