My experience with special educational needs
As a fully qualified teacher with over 8+ years experience, I have extensive experience delivering the Maths and Music National Curriculum to SEND learners within the classroom, in small groups and 1 to 1 sessions. I have a strong passion for working with learners who may feel nervous or anxious, those with neurodiversity, special educational needs, and individuals who lack confidence and enthusiasm. Having faced similar challenges in my own journey, my goal is to be the teacher I always needed. I strive to be empathetic, patient, fun, engaging, and supportive, creating an environment where you feel safe and supported to be your true authentic. I am committed to explain concepts in as many different ways as possible until you ‘really’ get it! which is evident in this recent feedback from a parent of one of my current KS4 students who has autism: “She was buzzing - You really booster her confidence”.
A bit about me
Originally from Australia, I have lived in the UK for over 18 years, studying Music and performing as a professional trumpeter in the Coldstream Guards and Scots Guards Bands. After an exciting career in music, I became a teacher to inspire, nurture, and provide the support I wished I had when I was younger. Diagnosed with combined-type ADHD later in life, I now understand the challenges neurodiverse learners face. I am passionate about being the teacher I always needed—one who builds strong relationships, adapts learning to individual needs, and delivers engaging, SEN-focused support. My commitment to students was recognised with a ‘Highly Commended’ award for Pearson’s Teacher of the Year 2022.
My teaching philosophy
Every student deserves a learning experience tailored to their unique needs. I make lessons engaging, interactive, and adaptable, breaking down concepts in ways that truly resonate. I create a safe, supportive, and patient environment where students feel valued and confident to take risks. Building strong, trusting relationships is at the heart of my teaching. My sessions are structured yet flexible, incorporating movement, discussion, and varied learning methods. Using proven SEN strategies like scaffolding and multisensory learning, I empower students with tools that boost both their education and self-confidence Above all, I want every student to feel seen, heard, and celebrated for who they truly are. I am committed to being the teacher who not only supports their academic success but also helps them embrace their true, authentic selves with confidence.
